Controlled Admin Access Pro for Temporary WordPress Admin Access

Delegate WordPress admin work with limited accounts

Controlled Admin Access Pro lets site administrators create temporary administrator accounts for theme designers, plugin developers, support agents, and others doing dashboard work. Choose the areas each account can use, then disable access when the task is complete.

A disabled account keeps its information, so you can activate it again if more work is needed. Expiration settings also limit how long access remains available. You can change or extend an account's expiry time when a task requires it.

Control menus and plugin pages

Choose which admin menu items a restricted administrator can access. The plugin can hide selected menu items and block their related pages if the user tries to open them another way.

Pro also provides more detailed control over supported plugins' internal pages. For example, you can allow WooCommerce Settings while restricting its Payments Gateways tab. Supported internal pages currently include WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, and BuddyPress.

Choose how restricted users sign in

Generate a secure login URL that lets the recipient enter the dashboard without a password. You can also disable password login for restricted administrators, which prevents them from signing in with a password or having a password-reset email sent.

The plugin can hide admin bar links at the top of pages in both the frontend and administration areas, limiting the navigation and actions visible to a restricted account.

Set expiry and disable access

Set an expiration time for each restricted administrator. After the account expires, it can no longer be used to log in to the WordPress dashboard. You can also disable an account at any time, such as after a developer finishes a bug fix or theme installation. Disabling blocks login while retaining the account information for possible future use.

Review activity and end sessions

The activity log records more than 20 actions performed by restricted administrators. Examples include activating, deactivating, or deleting a plugin; switching or deleting a theme; exporting data; publishing or deleting a post; and uploading a file.

When access needs to end immediately, remote logout forces the restricted administrator out of all logged-in devices and locations.

  1. Install and activate Controlled Admin Access Pro.
  2. Create a restricted administrator account for the person doing the work.
  3. Choose permitted menu items, internal pages, expiry settings, and other access controls.
  4. Send the account details or generate a login URL.
  5. Review activity, then disable the account or remotely log it out when the task is complete.
